Directions: At Milesburg intersection of Routes 150 and 220 cloverleaf take the exit to Yarnell. First road is Traceydale Road/Swampoodle Road, turn right. Then turn left onto Swampoodle, cemetery is 3/10 mile. |
Overall Condition: Fair |
Notes: On a sign in front of cemetery is a clear plastic folder containing the names of the interred. Many of the stones are now within the trees. |
Historical Status: Without knowing much of the history behind the Swamp Poodle site it is difficult to state its historical importance. There were probably over 50 burials here, but only a few stones are visible in the woods behind the sign. This is a site whose importance relies on its potential for discovery. |
Preservation Recommendation: Due to the major loss of stones over the years at this site, I recommend that the site be carefully mapped and recorded. Though the site is being somewhat cared for, it is difficult with the growth of the surrounding forest. The record which is kept at the sign for the cemetery is perhaps the best idea idea I've seen for preservation of these smaller sites which have many lost burials. |
