One Berry, Two Berry, Pick Me a Blueberry - Picnic & Program
Thursday, July 17, 2008 at 6:00 p.m.

For fruits are the luxuries of Nature. Under every thing else that is called a luxury, they are purely beneficial. The bursting buds, and bright flowers of spring, gladden the heart like the smiles of youth and innocence - soft lovely shades, fragrant juicy tempting fruits, green grass, pure air, open heavens, the music of birds - these are among the enjoyments of the happy healthy rural culturist. . . Happy they who cultivate a taste for these pure Enjoyments! - happy the children, whose school is a garden!

William Waring
Fruit Growers Hand Book
Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, 1851

Blueberries will be the featured fruit for our July dessert picnic, but that is not all. In addition to some blueberry dessert creations that we hope you will bring along to share with family and friends in the beautiful Centre Furnace Mansion gardens, we will be providing examples of some other locally grown and/or locally made products that suggest "the enjoyments of the happy healthy rural culturist."

The special bonus for the evening will be a presentation by Anne Quinn Corr: "Connecting with Our Roots - and Tubers - in Central PA" at 7:00 p.m. Anne, a Boalsburg resident, teaches basic food preparation at Penn State in the nutrition department and has been cooking professionally for more than thirty years, specializing in gourmet natural foods. She has been a freelance food columnist for the Centre Daily Times since 1985, and in 2000 authored Seasons of Central Pennsylvania, published by Penn State Press. The book not only highlights this part of Pennsylvania, but also its local cooks and their traditions. Anne currently is serving as the leader for the Slow Food Central PA Convivium, an international education organization dedicated to preserving traditional foodways and encouraging the use of locally produced foods, reflecting the environment in which they are showcased.

The plan for this July 17 evening at the Centre Furnace Mansion:

  • If you would like to hold your picnic supper on the Mansion lawns, gather up family and friends and arrive about 5:00 p.m.
  • If you plan to attend the dessert picnic only, we hope to begin serving at 6:00 p.m. We ask that you bring a dessert to share (6 - 8 servings) - featuring blueberries, if you would like.
  • The Historical Society will provide locally made beverages from Tait's Farm, Mount Nittany Winery and Elk Creek Café
  • Samples of freshly picked local blueberries will be available, along with examples of some other products that are locally grown, produced and marketed
  • At 7:00 p.m. in the Mansion Hearth Room: "Connecting with Our Roots - and Tubers - in Central PA" - Anne Quinn Corr

The Centre Furnace Mansion is located at 1001 East College Avenue in State College (the corner of College Avenue/Route 26 and Porter Road). Parking is available in the lot off Porter Road, or along the grassy area on College Avenue.
