Anne Coffin Johnstone Shrub Garden.
The shrub garden to your left, as you enter the Centre Furnace Mansion grounds
from the parking lot, was designed and given to the Centre County Historical
Society by Margery and Henry Johnstone, in memory of their daughter, Anne.
Memorial gifts were given by many friends to maintain this garden, and
to provide for a nearby bench. An old locust is at its center (a tree that
would have been popular with the Thompsons); circling it are a selection
of shrubs and plants - mostly white - that include viburnum, hostas, astilbes,
bleeding heart, and iris. We will be restoring this garden to feature only
white flowered plants as was originally intended.
