Volunteers

Thank You!

building acold frameThere are many volunteers whose footsteps we follow in here at the Centre Furnace Mansion, both inside and out. For these volunteers, we are thankful and have a special section called "Early Visionaries" that I encourage you to enjoy.

Currently, our Centre Furnace Mansion Garden Committee are the garden volunteers who are the backbone of this project and maintain the gardens at Centre Furnace Mansion on an ongoing basis. This project is for the benefit of everyone in our community and could not be done without your continued hard work and enthusiasm. A million thanks to all of you who come throughout the growing season for 7 months out of the year, and then some!

Of special note is the help that has been received through the United Way Day of Caring, a county-wide program ably coordinated by Colonel Gerald Russell. On the first Thursday in October for the last several years, a virtual horde of volunteers arrives at the mansion from all across the community. They spend much of the day planting, transplanting, pruning, trimming, mulching and weeding in the gardens under the leadership of the Centre Furnace Garden Committee and Mary Sorensen. Volunteers also handle a variety of tasks inside the Centre Furnace Mansion such as painting. Their efforts and the outcome are awesome.

A special thank you to Richard Pencek, Dan Stearns and Martin McGann, representing the Integrative Arts and the Landscape Contracting programs at Penn State University, for their expertise and for lending us wonderful students from their classes every year to do projects such as building a cold frame, helping with our web site garden maps and plant list and garden development.

Thank you to the State College Woman's Club and the Rotary Club of State College for their ongoing support in the development of the grounds at Centre Furnace Mansion over the years and for their gifts of trees and benches, and to the Lemont Garden Club and Bellefonte Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for their special gifts.
